Member Monday: Hamilton House

It’s time for Member Monday, and this week’s featured member is the Hamilton House in Whitewater. The stunning style and decor of this bed and breakfast will leave you speechless, and innkeepers Jim and Kathleen will make you feel at home with delectable breakfasts and outstanding hospitality.

Hamilton House Whitewater WIQ: How was the name chosen for the Hamilton House?
Mr. Hamilton was the owner of the property in the early 1900’s until the 1950’s.   He was on the board of regents of our local university as well as a local attorney.

Q: What history is behind the Hamilton House?
Was built in 1861 with the underground railroad in mind.  Majorly remodeled in 1880.  After the last of the Hamiltons passed in the 1950’s the house has served as a boarding house, fraternity, antique shop, tea house, office building, almost torn down twice and a bed and breakfast since 1994.  We took over in 2000.  Details on our website.

Q: How did you come to acquire a bed and breakfast?
We were looking for a great house to raise our family while running an inn.  We were focused on an area close to tourism and a short drive back to Chicago area where our family lives.

Hamilton House Whitewater WIQ: What makes Hamilton House unique?
At the Hamilton House we find most of our guests prefer privacy and are looking to spend their precious time connecting with their loved ones.  Therefore we make every effort to create an environment where all the details are taken care of so all the guests need to do is be together.

In addition we cater to the specific needs of the Whitewater area midweek business travelers.  These guests have very different and specific needs while traveling.  I enjoy helping to make their time away from their families as relaxing and productive as possible.  We offer alternate policies that fit their specialized needs.

Q: What is your favorite part about being a local business in southeastern Wisconsin?
The business community has very supportive and welcoming from the very beginning.  As we were looking at different communities we wandered around each town chatting with the local shop keepers.  Whitewater, by far, was the most supportive and eager to help us get established.  This supportive environment among the local owners of the different businesses in town remains strong.

Q: What is favorite part of being a bed and breakfast owner?
Being able to provide the environment for our guests to relax and spend quality time together.

Q: If someone would like to visit Hamilton House, is there anything they should know before coming?
We make every effort to provide all the privacy our guests need while still being easily available to tend to the details of each guests needs.

Hamilton House Whitewater WIQ: What kind of breakfasts are offered? Can dietary restrictions be met?
We serve a full hot breakfast in the dining room at 9am.  For those that prefer privacy we do offer the option for an in room breakfast.    We make every effort to accommodate all diet restrictions.

Q: Are the bathrooms private or shared?
Every room has a private bath.

Q: Are pets allowed?
Hamilton House is a pet free environment.

Q: Is there a whirlpool?
:  Five of our guest rooms have a jetted tub.

Hamilton House Whitewater WIQ: Is there a fireplace? If yes, please describe.
Three of our guest rooms have a modern gas fireplace.  Three rooms have original mantels with candles in the firebox.

Q: May guests come and go as they please, or are there certain times they are asked to be at the bed and breakfast?
Guests receive a key to the property allowing them to come and go as they choose.

Q: Is Hamilton House child-friendly or adult-only?
We welcome guests 15 and over.  If a family takes the whole house children of all ages are welcome.

Q: Can each room in Hamilton House be rented out to a single family?
Each of our eight guest rooms has either a king or a queen bed that sleeps up to two guests.  A rollaway is available for use in two of our guest rooms.

Hamilton House Whitewater WIQ: What are the check in/check out times?
General check in is from 4pm – 7pm.  Check out time is 11am.   Options are available for alternate arrival and departure times.  Many of our packages include early arrival or extended departure times.

Q: Is the Hamilton House handicapped accessible?

Q: Can you book your stay online?
Yes, you can book online through various travel sites.  However, the best available rates are always on our secure reservation service on our website.

Q: Where can we find Hamilton House?
328 W Main St, Whitewater or online at

Please tell us about the innkeepers

Jim and Kathleen came to Wisconsin from the Chicago area to raise their five children and live out their dreams of innkeeping and farming.  Over the past 15 years they have enjoyed being a part of their community while watching their children meet their dreams.  Kathleen has a passion for hospitality and enjoys cooking.   In her free time she enjoys reading, biking and wandering around in nature.  Jim is a farmer at heart and spends his free time with their children renovating a small farm where they plan to grow organic meat and produce.

12 Days of Christmas Fun

With only 12 days until Christmas, there’s much hustle and bustle everywhere you look. City sidewalks are busy and all dressed in holiday style. Shimmering lights gleam through the night, and everyone is full of good cheer. After all, it’s the most wonderful time of year!

The countdown to Christmas is on, and we wanted to celebrate in our own festive way…Walworth County-style! With so many fun activities and businesses right here in Walworth County, we’ve put a spin on the traditional Christmas carol by finding 12 fun things you can do, see or purchase around the county up until Christmas Day (some of which you can also enjoy after the holidays, if you can’t seem to squeeze them all in before Christmas!).

On the first day of Christmas Walworth County gave to me: A bottle of Hardy Pear wine.
Apple Barn Orchard & Winery, W6384 Sugar Creek Road, Elkhorn, WI 53121, 262-728-3266

Located on a property with a rich agricultural history, The Apple Barn Orchard & Winery was started in 1985. Today the orchard has over 14 apple varieties among 4,000 apple trees. Along with the orchard, there is a bakery, country store and winery. The Apple Barn Winery specializes in fruit wines. Among the selection is the Hardy Pear wine, one of their many award-winning wines.

Stop by the winery this weekend for their final open hours of the season. Open December 12 – 13, from 10 am to 4 pm. Get your true love a bottle (or two!) of Hardy Pear wine!

On the second day of Christmas Walworth County gave to me: Two pounds of Turtle Fudge.
Geneva Gifts, 150 Broad Street, Lake Geneva, WI 53147, (262)248-6756

Making homemade cream and butter fudge since 1983, Geneva Gifts is a great place to shop locally for Christmas gifts and treats. Coined the “best fudge in town,” you won’t be disappointed with their delectable Turtle Fudge that is smooth, creamy and ooey-gooey with just the right amount of pecan crunch. After all, what’s not to love about chocolate, caramel and pecans?!

On the third day of Christmas Walworth County gave to me: Three Stewing Hens.
Yuppie Hill Farm, W1384 Potter Rd Burlington, WI 53105, (262) 210-0264

Yuppie Hill poultry farm prides themselves on providing the absolute best farm-to-table freshness for their customers. Starting back in 1999, Yuppie Hill got its name from neighbors commenting on the “high class” poultry living quarters, referring to the birds as “yuppies” because they had it so good.

All of the birds on this farm are raised in a cage-free environment. Owner Lynn Lein raises laying hens and braisers, turkeys and Berkshire hogs, selling eggs, poultry and meats at local stores, including at Beans & Barley, Outpost Natural Foods and the Great Lakes Winter Farm Market at Milaeger’s in Racine.

On the fourth day of Christmas Walworth County gave to me: Four cabaret-style performances.
Rosewood, 2484 County Road O S, Delavan, WI 53115, (262) 275-5587

One of Walworth County’s newest attractions is Rosewood, in Delavan. Whether it’s the high-energy vocal performances, the farm-fresh culinary, or the ambiance of the rustic-styled dining areas and theater that are complimented with the glimmering technology of today, you’re sure to find a reason to visit; a reason that will most likely leave you dancing off into the night.

Their “Christmas Remembered” show will bring back the magic of Christmas with your all-time favorite carols, hymns and songs. Show times still available on December 12. 13. 17 and 20.

On the fifth day of Christmas Walworth County gave to me: An exquisite five course dinner.
Hunt Club, 555 Hunt Club Court, Lake Geneva, WI 53147, (262) 245-7200

With a crackling fireplace, twinkling lights and a glimmering tree, Hunt Club Steakhouse has the perfect ambiance for a scrumptious meal. Start with choosing one of their Easy bites; a splendid choice of appetizers that are certain to please. Next indulge in a delicious salad before warming up with one of their delectable soups. Then tantalize your taste buds with one of their signature steaks, and don’t forget to save room enough to please your sweet tooth with one of their divine desserts.

The Hunt Club is fine dining at its best. With all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, you deserve a treat for yourself.

On the sixth day of Christmas Walworth County gave to me: Six Christmas dinner geese.
Wilson Farm Meats, 406 South Wisconsin Street, Elkhorn, WI 53121, (262) 723-2919

The Wilson family has been farming since the 1870’s, and Wilson Farm Meats was established in 2004. This local retail and processing facility in Elkhorn assures the finest quality fresh and frozen meats, custom cut to your liking. Whether you purchase a whole or half beef, pig or lamb, or individual retail cuts, The Wilson family proudly provides the finest quality meats from their farm to your table.

With a wide variety of meats to choose from, seasonal favorites offered include goose and pheasant.

On the seventh day of Christmas Walworth County gave to me: Seven swimming lessons.
Whitewater Aquatic & Fitness Center, 580 S. Elizabeth Street, Whitewater, WI 53190, (262) 473-4900

If you’re looking for a way to escape the cold for an hour here and there, the Whitewater Aquatic & Fitness Center will be the perfect getaway. There are six levels of swim lessons that are designed for recreational swimming and fitness.

On the eighth day of Christmas Walworth County gave to me: Eight cheeses a churning.
The Cheese Box, 801 South Wells Street, Lake Geneva, WI 53147, (262) 248-3440

If you’re looking for some of Wisconsin’s finest cheeses for yourself or someone else, The Cheese Box has you covered. With everything from orange and white Wisconsin cheddar to cherry, blueberry and cranberry Wisconsin cheddar, you’re sure to find something to treat your taste buds to.

If you’re stocked up on cheeses for the holiday, you can always call to order a build-your-own-sandwich and take a break from gift buying and wrapping with a delicious lunch.

On the ninth day of Christmas Walworth County gave to me: Nine dancing horses.
Dancing Horses Theatre, 5065 Hwy 50, Delavan, WI 53115, (262) 728-8200

Immerse yourself in the spirit of Christmas with the holiday show at Dancing Horses Theatre. The dazzling spectacle of horses who dance alongside their trainers will prove to be a fantastic cavalcade of equestrian artistry.

Christmas show performances will be available through January 12, 2016.

On the tenth day of Christmas Walworth County gave to me: Ten ballet dancers leaping.
Young Auditorium, 930 W. Main Street, Whitewater 53190, (262) 472-2222

Be enchanted by the annual production of “The Nutcracker” at Young Auditorium in Whitewater. Based on the story “The Nutcracker and the King of Mice,” by E.T.A. Hoffman, this performance will stun you as talented area youth dance on stage with gorgeous costumes and lavish backdrops.

Reserve your tickets now for the Friday, December 18 performance from 10 am to 12 pm.

On the eleventh day of Christmas Walworth County gave to me: Eleven carolers caroling.
Old World Wisconsin, W370 W9729 Hwy 67, Eagle, WI 53119, (262) 594-6301

Get lost in the merriment of the season with a daylong, 19th century celebration of Christmas tales and holiday customs. Old World storytelling, live performances, bobsled rides (if there’s snow, of course), caroling, tasty treats and so much more will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy with Christmas spirit. Revel in Christmas past at Old World Wisconsin, in Eagle.

The final celebrations to send good cheer for 2015 will be December 12 – 13, from 10 am to 5 pm.

On the twelfth day of Christmas Walworth County gave to me: Twelve Drummers Drumming.
Grand Geneva Resort & Spa, 7036 Grand Geneva Way, Lake Geneva, WI 53147, (800) 558-3417

Maybe there will only be one drummer actually drumming, but you will hear the fantastical sounds of local High School entertainment as they perform live in the main lobby at Grand Geneva.

Performing Saturday December 12 and Saturday December 19 from 1:30 to 3:30 pm.
