Watson’s Wild West Museum

I don’t know about you, but when I spend time with kids I like to find unique stops of entertainment. Mainstream excursions are fun, sure, but they lack character and originality. I have a seven-year-old niece, whom I call my Love Bug, and we like to plan day-long adventures together – just the two of us.  Whenever we plan a “Love Bug and Auntie Day” she usually gets to choose what we do. Her number one choice: Build-A-Bear. While I don’t mind taking her there once in a while, it’s the same experience every time. Nothing changes except the merchandise, and she doesn’t really get any lasting, impactful memories from it.

Having the treat of working with the Walworth County Visitors Bureau, I have the opportunity to learn about all of the amazing, fun things to do in the Lake Geneva area. We had a “Love Bug and Auntie Day” coming up, and I really wanted to go somewhere that would tie in with her current seven-year-old interests and give her a true experience. Right now she’s CRAZY about horses. With the horse theme comes cowboys/cowgirls, cowboy boots, cowboy hats…you get the idea. Come to find out, there’s a little slice of the Wild West right here in Walworth County at Watson’s Wild West Museum in Elkhorn.

Watson's Wild West Museum, Elkhorn, Walworth County, WI.

Love Bug was a bit apprehensive about going to a Wild West museum, most likely because we’d never done anything quite like this before. That said, she probably didn’t know what to expect. Once we pulled into the parking lot at Watson’s, her excitement instantly grew and I couldn’t park the car fast enough for her.

It genuinely looks like you are driving into the Wild West. There is an old mine, covered wagons, a big teepee, wagon wheels, and tons more. Love Bug was enamored by the place, and we hadn’t even gone inside yet!

Once she had her fill of the incredible outdoor display, she said it was time to go inside. The large wood door was of significant stature, so we gave it a good pull together to open it. The “foyer” hall was decorated from floor to ceiling in interesting vintage Wild West artifacts, but as soon as Love Bug saw the old saloon doors, she was ready to go in!

We pushed through the saloon doors and there wasn’t anyone in sight. We went through the next door slowly peeking through when we heard a loud, “Howdy Partner!” There before us stood a tall, gentle man that looked as though he literally stepped right out of the American Old West. He had a huge smile on his face, introduced himself as Cowboy Doug, and welcomed us in true western fashion.

Panning for gold at Watson's Wild West Museum, Elkhorn, Walworth County, WI.

Cowboy Doug took us around the room sharing tall tales, offering tidbits of history, and helping us imagine life in the 1800s. There’s much to look at inside the museum, enough to enthrall both young and old. We talked about chores and entertainment of the time, panned for gold, yelled “Ye-Haw!” as we sat in an old western saddle, got roped, and even had a Sarsaparilla slid down the bar to us, just like they did in the old days.

When it was time to head out Love Bug showed off the stash of gold she panned for, grabbed a Sarsaparilla, and walked out looking back over her shoulder with that typical kid look of wanting more. She bounced across the parking area pointing out things she missed when we originally walked in. As I drove out of the museum lot I heard, “Auntie, when can we go there again?” That was all the confirmation I needed to be convinced that Watson’s Wild West museum trumped Build-A-Bear for a “Love Bug and Auntie Day”. I guarantee we’ll return for another visit, and I’m almost certain that the next trip will be as unique as this one was.

New Member Feature: Lake Geneva Clue Room

If you haven’t heard the news, there’s a new attraction in town that’s full of fun, mystery, and problem solving. We’d like to welcome the Lake Geneva Clue Room to downtown Lake Geneva! If you haven’t yet heard of clue rooms, or escape rooms, they are one of the hottest new trends of live action entertainment. A clue room is a physical adventure game where players are “locked” in a room and have to use elements from within the room to solve a series of puzzles that lead you to the code that allows you to escape the room. And, you only have 60 minutes to do it! We were so crazy excited to have this new attraction right here in Walworth County that we decided to have a little Q & A session with Kathy Speaker, from the Lake Geneva Clue Room, to get all the deets on the new area entertainment.

Lake Geneva Clue Room. Lake Geneva's Newest Attraction.
WCVB: Please tell us about the Lake Geneva Clue Room.
KS: Lake Geneva Clue Room is an interactive game for groups of 2 to 10 people. You have 60 minutes to work together to solve the puzzles and challenges in order to make your escape. There are three different rooms available everyday–C&NW Railroad, Cold War Clash, and Al Capone. Great for families, bachelor/bachelorette parties, groups of friends out for the evening, or team building.

WCVB: How was Lake Geneva Clue Room started? How did the idea start for the new business?
KS: My family went to Clue Carre in New Orleans. There were 14 of us —7 of us in each room. We had so much fun, we switched rooms the next day. My brother has always wanted to start his own business and since I am a retired school teacher, I offered to help.

WCVB: What age range is suitable to participate at the Lake Geneva Clue Room?
KS: I always say 8 to 80+. Younger kids see things differently and are very helpful. My mom has done them and loves them—she’s 80.

WCVB: How many Clue Rooms do you have?
KS: We have three rooms in Lake Geneva and three rooms in Baltimore.

WCVB: Is there a minimum party size required to participate in the Clue Room?
KS: We have had groups of 2 that have been successful.

WCVB: How far in advance does one need to book with Lake Geneva Clue Room?
KS: At this early stage, people can book for the same day. That might change as we get busier. You can book unto 6 months in advance online.

WCVB: Do you offer sessions for special parties, such as corporate events?
KS: Yes. Corporate events and bachelor/bachelorette parties are a good match for our rooms. We can put 10 in each room so we can handle 30 at any one time session. Also we have a large lobby if they want to bring in their own food.

WCVB: Are you really locked in the room?
KS: Technically no. In most games, you are just solving the mystery. We do have one room where you have to put the code into the door to exit. The key is in the door as well for safety.

Lake Geneva Clue Room. Lake Geneva's Newest Attraction!

WCVB: Do the themes change? If so, how often?
KS: The plan is to change the rooms once a year. We can either change the puzzles in the room keeping the same basic theme or we can do a complete overhaul of the room.

WCVB: Is there an ongoing challenge for people to escape the room in record time?
KS: We keep track of the number of groups that get out and their time. We plan to have a “Wall of Fame” after we finish our first month of business.

WCVB: How are the challenge themes chosen?
KS: We try to use themes that are related to the area. We have C&NW railroad and Al Capone. In Baltimore, we have an Edgar Allen Poe room. Also we chose the Cold War Clash because it is an unusual game with two identical rooms.

WCVB: Can Clue Room sessions be scheduled online?
KS: That is the best way to schedule. Large groups might want to call our group sales line. We also take walk-ins if the time is available.

WCVB: How much does it cost to participate in the Clue Room?
KS: $29 per person. Group rates are available by calling our group sales line.

WCVB: Can gift certificates be purchased for the Lake Geneva Clue Room?
KS: Yes. Those can be done on our website as well.

WCVB: Are all of the themed sessions of equal difficulty, or are certain themes more challenging than others?
KS: We think they are all challenging—just in different ways. Some are very logical (right brained) and some are more symbolic (left brained).

WCVB: As a new business owner in the area, what do you like most about doing business in the Lake Geneva area?
KS: First of all—everyone we have met here has been wonderful. This includes the City of Lake Geneva employees, the fire department, the Visit Lake Geneva people, and all the other business owners I have met. Plus I think fun people come to Lake Geneva to vacation. Perfect for us.

WCVB: Where can the Lake Geneva Clue Room be found, and what are the hours/session times?
KS: We are located in the Landmark Center—the last two units on the first floor. The first session is at 10:00 am and the last one is at 8:30 pm. We are flexible if a group wants to come earlier or later.

WCVB: Please tell us a little about yourself as a local business owner.
KS: I am a retired high school teacher. I taught Business Education and coached at Crystal Lake Central High School for over 30 years. I live in Richmond with my husband Jim and have 3 daughters. My youngest daughter and her husband are helping me run the Lake Geneva location.

Foodie Friday: National Hamburger Month

We love May in Walworth County for so many reasons. One of the top reasons being National Hamburger Month. Hamburgers are like tradition throughout the Lake Geneva area, and you can sink your teeth into signature beef sandwiches at almost any local restaurant. Here are five sizzling places where you can satisfy your every burger craving.

1. Snug Harbor (Delavan)

Snug Harbor’s Jalapeno Burger will spice up your meal and perhaps even leave you wiping sweat from your brow.  This 1/2 lb., hand pattied burger is seasoned with a special blend of secret spices. Top it off with Jalapeno peppers and pepper jack cheese, and you’ll be digging into one fiery burger!

Sperinos PubPizzaBurger2. Sperinos (Elkhorn)

The Pub Pizza Burger is a made from 1/3 lb. of Sperino’s very own homemade Italian sausage. The patty is topped off with grilled onions and green peppers, fresh Mozzarella cheese, tomato basil sauce, and is served up on a toasted Brioche bun. Combining a hamburger with a pizza makes for one devilishly delicious burger.

SprechersCurdBurger3. Sprecher’s Restaurant & Pub (Lake Geneva)

Sprecher’s Curd Burger rings Wisconsin through and through! This fresh Angus Steakburger is topped with yellow and white cheese curds, onion straws, sauce made with Sprecher’s own Witty beer, and is encompassed in a toasted onion bun. Add your choice of a side, and you most definitely won’t be heading home hungry.

4. Hawk’s View Golf Club (Lake Geneva)

The Adobe Guacamole Burger from Hawk’s View was made famous at the 2015 Burger Throwdown event, and there’s no doubt why. This scrumptious southwest-style burger is smothered in adobe peppers, avocado, red onion, seasonings, cilantro, and Cheddar cheese on a toasted bun. You’ll be daydreaming of a place out west as you devour this tasty little treat.

Lookout Burger from Lake Lawn Resort5. The Lookout Bar & Eatery (Delavan)

The Lookout Burger at Lake Lawn Resort’s The Lookout is a finger-lickin’ good burger that has TWO 1/2 lb. Angus beef patties layered with Cheddar cheese, bacon and BBQ pulled pork on a warm potato roll. Add some natural cut steak fries and you’ll have a meal fit for a burger king. If all that deliciousness alone wasn’t good enough, you can even add a draft of Miller Lite for a buck to top it all off.

Which hamburger is the best, you ask? In all honesty, we have NO idea. We love our burgers like Carl loved Ellie, and we enjoyed every burger we ate, so you will have to be your own judge!
