Pick of the Patch: Pumpkin Patches 2016

Charlie Brown may have found THE Great Pumpkin, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to find your perfect pick of the patch this autumn. The Lake Geneva area is home to multiple farms where you can pick your own pumpkin, or choose your favorite from available pre-picked pumpkins.  Many of the area patches are already open and ready for pumpkin season, with just a couple of the pick-your-own patches opening October 1st.

It’s Apple Time

Autumn hasn’t quite arrived yet, but it is definitely in the air around Walworth County. There are many fun fall activities around the Lake Geneva area throughout the season, and apple picking is generally one of the first, early fall activities each year. With so many local orchards to choose from, you’re certain to find exactly what you’re looking for. Whether you want a day of family fun, or simply want to go browse local apple varieties, there’s an orchard in the area for you. Here’s a quick reference to the Pick-Your-Own and Pre-Picked orchards in the county.

Fall Fun Fridays: September 26

There is SO much fun to fun to be found in the Lake Geneva area this fall, so we’re making it easy for you!  Each week, we’ll feature Five Fun Fall Festivities (activities you can do this weekend)!  For details or more things to do, visit our website.

  1. Take an autumn train ride with the East Troy Electric Railroad.
    The East Troy Electric Railroad runs every weekend in the fall (September 6 – November 2), going from the East Troy depot to The Elegant Farmer every hour.  PLUS – this Saturday is their “Milwaukee Day” where all of the train cars are taken out, so guests can view the collection.  Train tickets are good all day long (as many rides as you’d like) and cost just $12.50 for adults and $8.00 for children (ages 3-11).

  2. Stop by Apple Barn Orchard in Elkhorn for their 26th annual Apple Fest.
    The annual Apple Fest at Apple Barn is this weekend, September 27-28 from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.  Just a few of the activities they will have throughout the weekend are:  face painting, food & refreshments, live music, Walworth County Cloggers performance, jump/slide for kids, tree maze, arts & crafts, and of course – pick your own pumpkins and apples.  If you’re heading out – make sure you bring your own wagon/stroller for your time in the orchard/pumpkin patch!apple barn
  3. Get lost in the corn maze at Army Lake Camp.
    Army Lake Camp, located in East Troy, features a corn maze, wagon rides, pumpkin patch, concessions, a climbing wall, and kids’ games.  The camp & corn maze is open September 26 – November 1 on Fridays & Saturdays.  Groups (scouts, schools, churches, etc) can make special group reservations for Wednesdays & Thursdays.  At $8.00 per adult and $5.00 for children (5-12 years old), the corn maze is a great way to have fun this fall!Army-Lake-Corn-Maize
  4. Visit one of the local farmers’ markets for fall decor and fresh produce.  
    Many of our local farmers markets are open through October, including Lake Geneva (Thursdays at Horticultural Hall) & Whitewater (Saturdays at Winchester True Value).  There is plenty of great produce in the fall, and you know exactly what you’re getting when you buy directly from the farmer!DSC_0312
  5. Check out The Elegant Farmer‘s Autumn Harvest Fest.  
    This fall festival is happening every Saturday & Sunday (September 6 – October 26) from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm.  The fest features hayrides to the orchard & pumpkin patch, pony rides, train rides, “make your own caramel apple,” a corn maze, and more!  The corn maze is just $5 per person.  Don’t forget to stop inside to pick up one of their famous Apple Pies Baked in a Paper Bag – YUM!elegantfarmer

It’s finally fall – and that means apple orchards, pumpkin patches, hay rides, piles & piles of crunchy leaves…not to mention pie and everything pumpkin flavored!  If you’re looking for something fun to do this fall, you’ve come to the right place.  Walworth County is FULL of fun autumn activities, including great Fall Festivals.

The Lake Geneva area is home to many great apple orchards and pumpkin patches – including some that offer “pick your own” in addition to their pre-picked selection.  For those looking to get apples and pumpkins pre-picked, the area offers plenty of additional choices!

Join Busy Barns this fall for Autumn Adventures (weekends Sept 13 – Oct 26; weekdays in October)!  Take a hayride out to the you-pick pumpkin patch to select your perfect jack o’ lantern, or choose from their pre-picked pumpkins.  Find yourself in the 4-acre trivia corn maze or check out any of their kid-friendly activities – the fun never stops!

Every weekend is Harvest Fest at The Elegant Farm (Sept 6 – Oct 26)!  Enjoy a corn maze, pick your own apples, train rides, pony rides, hayrides, and more!  The market at The Elegant Farmer is open daily (with plenty of pre-picked apples), but the orchard is only open on weekends, so plan accordingly if you’re looking for pick your own.

Visitors can stop by to pick their own apples daily – but Royal Oak recommends you call ahead to check on picking conditions.  In addition to the expansive orchard, they offer orchard tours, hay rides, a market/bakery, on-site restaurant, a free petting zoo, and train rides – to name a few fun activities!

 

Walworth County Fall Festivals 2013

Fall will be here before we know it (rumors are that leaves are already turning in select places throughout Walworth County!), and while we all love summer time…there’s still plenty to look forward to this fall!  For example, check out these great festivals:

Walworth County Fair (August 28-Sept 2) – Kicking off another fantastic fall in Walworth County is the traditional Walworth County Fair, located in Elkhorn at the Walworth County fairgrounds!  With rides, great food, entertainment, and live shows, this is widely proclaimed as one of the best fairs around.  Join in the fun this year – and while you’re there, stop by the WCVB booth!!

Darien Corn Fest (Sept 6-8) – A parade, princess pageant, tournaments, fireworks, and corn, corn, CORN…what’s not to love about Corn Fest?!  Located at the Darien West Park, this festival will feature live music Friday & Saturday night, Bingo, auction, their annual parade, and more.

Lake Geneva Wine Festival (Sept 7) – Back by popular demand, the Lake Geneva Wine Festival is returning after a one-year hiatus and will take place on September 7th at Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan, WI.  Enjoy wines from around the world paired with samples from local restaurants; visit their website for ticket and event details.

East Troy Bluegrass Festival (Sept 7-8) – For the past 19 years, hundreds of individuals from around the country have flocked to East Troy’s historic Village Square the second weekend in September to hear & share the unforgettable bluegrass sound.  Join them this year for another two great days of bluegrass music!

Delavan Scarecrow Fest (Sept 14) – The 13th annual Scarecrow Fest will take place in downtown Delavan, and everyone is invited to come check out the dressed and decorated scarecrows throughout historic downtown Delavan.  Scarecrow Fest features horse-drawn carriage rides, craft fair, flea market, sidewalk sales, pie & cake auction, scarecrow decorating, and more.

Antique & Classic Boat Show (Sept 27-29) – This annual event is held in The Abbey Resort’s harbor and is presented by the Blackhawk Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society.  The show features classic and vintage boats from all over the country on display all weekend; viewing is free to the public.  Boat parade is scheduled for Saturday.

Antique Flea Market (Sept 29) – The last one of the season…if you haven’t been to any of the Antique Flea Markets this season, make sure you get to the Walworth County Fairgrounds for this one!  With over 500 vendors, you never know what you will find at the Antique Flea Market.

Lake Geneva Oktoberfest (Oct 12-13) – Visit downtown Lake Geneva for their 22nd annual Oktoberfest, featuring music, magic, the Great Pumpkin Giveaway, food, craft booths, and more.  The free shuttle will be running for the weekend 10a-7p each day, with pick-up/drop-off locations at Petco (Hwy 50 & Edwards Blvd) and downtown Mill Creek Hotel.

Elkhorn Oktoberfest (Oct 19) – Located in the downtown square, this festival offers wine & beer tasting, chili cook-off, food vendors, craft fair, a car show, and live entertainment!  There’s plenty for the kids too, with games, pumpkin decorating, bounce house, and more.

Beer and Spirits (Nov 2) – Open to the public, this festival will take place at Grand Geneva Resort & Spa this year.  The $40 admission ticket includes a commemorative tasting glass and unlimited tastings of beer.  Guests can also sample specialty liquors, food, and take part in a raffle benefiting the Water Safety Patrol.
