Shop Local Saturday: Boatique in the Bay (at Pier 290)

Join us every Saturday as we feature a store in the Lake Geneva area!  Get the scoop behind the unique shops throughout Walworth County, and find out what makes them stand above the rest.

This week, we checked back with Leanne at Pier 290 – this time to talk about their “outside store” – Boatique in the Bay!  This fashionable boutique offers a variety of women’s & children’s clothing (including the amazing Lilly Pulitzer!), in addition to jewelry and home decor.  Personally, we love their line of Lake Geneva jewelry – check it out in person 7 days a week at the boutique.  Until then, read more about this great shop below…

Q:  How did your store get its start?
A:  In the Spring of 2013 we hired a Director of Retail Operations to run the shop at Pier 290, the Lake Geneva Cruise Line Gift Shop at the Riviera Docks, and the shop at the Gage Marine Sales and Service location on Highway 50. In June of 2013, she proposed the idea of a boutique based on her past experiences with some strong fashion vendors.  The concept became reality in May of 2014 with the opening of the Lilly Pulitzer inspired boutique.

Q:  How did you choose the name for your store?
A:  It was quite a process!  First we all brainstormed, then we threw them all out.  Then we brainstormed again, and threw those out too.  Next we held a contest and received some good name entries, but none of them stood out as “the one”.  Finally, our Director of Marketing and our Store Manager blurted out the same name at the same time, and our “Boatique in the Bay” was born!  The name and the logo embody both our fashion forward feel, our nautical surroundings, and our passion for boats.

Q:  How long has Boatique in the Bay been open?
A:  We have been in business a little over a year as we added this second store in May of 2014 and became known as “The Shops at Pier 290”.

Q:  What makes Boatique in the Bay unique?
A:  Shop by boat in the Summer and by snowmobile in the Winter! We strive to be different, with a beachy feel and a relaxed atmosphere.  Where else could you shop barefoot in your swimwear, with a drink in your hand, while you wait for your friends to have a fabulous meal with an even more fabulous view?!

Q:  What kind of apparel can we find in your store?
A:  We are primarily a Lilly Pulitzer Women’s and Children’s apparel store, but we realize that not everyone would choose to dress so colorfully – so we also carry the sleek, hip, city-style line of Joseph Ribkoff and some free-spirited, fun lines such as Papillon and Young Threads.  We also, of course carry swim wear and accessories for the beach. For men we offer the high end Scottish haberdasher, Carnoustie along with the West Coast Prep of Johnnie-O.  Many, many accessories for both men and women, as well as jewelry by names such as Uno de 50 of Spain, Avaasi of New York, and silver Lake Geneva inspired designs by local artists.

Q:  What is the “must have” item from your store?
A:  Oh there are so many!  I would definitely say ANYTHING LILLY!  But not to be overlooked is the wonderful Lake Geneva jewelry, perfume from Kaii of California, or even a bold and colorful Scout rug!

Q:  What is YOUR personal favorite item from the store?
A:  In addition to the fun Lilly Pulitzer apparel, I happen to love the customizable large canvas art by Patrick Reid O’Brien – it really highlights the theme of being a part of this wonderful lake community.

Q:  What is your favorite part about being a local business in Williams Bay?
A: It’s our customers who make us special:  We just love to see the familiar faces of the members of our Boat Club, In/Out Service, and “regulars” in Pier 290 Restaurant and have the chance to welcome them by name.  An added bonus is seeing the delighted look on the faces of newcomers from all over the country.

Q:  Any events/specials coming up?
A:  Since we recently officially named our shop, we will be sponsoring a party for the unveiling of our new name and signage this Summer.  Also, we will be hosting a “Christmas in July” event which will enable those who are only here for the Summer to experience what types of items we offer in the Fall and Winter seasons. Speaking of Christmas, we empty the store in late October and reopen in mid-November as a complete Christmas shop!  It’s a very fun way to shop for decorations, gifts, and Winter apparel and put yourself in the mood for the holidays!

Q:  If someone wants to visit, is there anything they should know before coming?
A:  You WILL find something that you love!  Also, be sure to plan for some time to relax with a cold drink and your feet in the sand or a yummy snack by the ambiance of the fire.

Q:  Do you offer gift wrapping?
A:  Yes, as of this month we have adorable, nautically inspired logo bags with printed tissue and ribbon available.

Q:  Do you ship, and can people order from your store online?
A:  Yes, we will happily ship anywhere.  We will be opening both an Online Store and a Bridal Registry in the coming year.  But for now, just give us a call and we’ll ship it out to you!

Q:  Where (and when) can we find Boatique in the Bay?
A:  At Pier 290 Restaurant at Gage Marina, 1 Liechty Drive, Williams Bay.  Phone number:  262-245-2100.  We are the “outside shop” located across the sandbox from the outside bar.  Our Summer hours are 7 days a week from 10am – 10 pm.  We hope to see you soon!
