Shop Local Saturday: Studio Winery

Join us every Saturday as we feature a store in the Lake Geneva area!  Get the scoop behind the unique shops throughout Walworth County, and find out what makes them stand above the rest.

We interviewed Doug Jackson from Studio Winery – an urban winery that is “one part Art Gallery, one part Recording Studio, & 100% delicious!”  Located just outside of downtown Lake Geneva, this winery is starting its 4th year in business this May.  A visit to Studio Winery is unlike anything else; on weekends, they feature live music, concerts, art classes, and of course wine tastings (offered daily).

Q:  Tell us about Studio Winery…
A:  People ask us two major questions. The first is, what do we do here? We explain like this: What to bakeries do? They bake bread, right? What to breweries do? They brew beer, right? What do we do? We make wine.

The other major question we get is how we got started. The short answer is a blue ribbon. The first wine we ever entered in competition earned a blue ribbon at the Wisconsin State Fair. That pretty much lit the fuse for us. I studded enology, Kathy studied viticulture and after a number of years, here we are. There’s a lot more to it than just this short story, so I encourage readers to stop in and get more details.

The winery (building) started as a machine shop. We purchased Hay Manufacturing building in 2009. It took us several years to rehab and prepare for business.

Q:  How did you choose the name “Studio Winery?”
A:  I’m a musician. I’ve played keyboards in a number of bands and have played to crowds over 10,000. My wife Kathy, is an artist. She’s done product design for the NFL, McDonalds and many other large companies. Art studio, Music studio, Wine Studio.

GiftsQ:  What do you sell at the winery?
A:  We sell wine primarily.  We also offer locally brewed beers, some “light bites” and giftware as well, but really what we offer is an experience.

Q:  What makes your store unique?
A:  It’s hard to put a string around that. Without exaggeration, almost everything about us is unique.

HobieQ:  Do you have any events/specials coming up?
A:  I would direct you to our website. We have live music every Saturday from 4-8 PM, year ’round. We have “Corks & Canvas” painting classes twice a month. We even do ticketed concert events. Sam Llanas (formerly of the BoDeans) is playing May 8th.

Q:  Do you ship, and can people order from your store online?
A:  This will be a feature of our website in a matter of weeks.

Q:  Do you offer gift wrapping?
A:  Every bottle of wine we sell comes hand-wrapped in bright red tissue paper in a Studio Winery designer bag. All of our giftware is available to be hand-wrapped as well.

Q:  What is the “must have” item from Studio Winery?
A:  Very simply put: the wine.

Q:  Where can we find Studio Winery?
A:  We are on the fashionable upper East side of Lake Geneva – 401 Sheridan Springs Road. We are open daily 11-6 with the last tasting at 5:30. Closed Tuesdays.  Saturday tastings from 11-3 PM, with live music from 4-8 PM.

A few happy guests at one of the Corks & Canvas events at Studio Winery
