It’s Kristen, your helpful Walworth County representative! I had a busy week touring Walworth County last week…and I didn’t even see it all!
I started the week on Tuesday with a mail boat tour with Lake Geneva Cruise Lines on Geneva Lake! The view from the lake is spectacular – especially with the great fall colors peaking.
We made a stop in Fontana at the Abbey Resort for a delicious lunch (try their sweet potato fries – YUM) & the best chocolate cake I’ve ever tasted, then we headed back to the boat for a tour of the rest of the lake. After some shopping downtown, we ended the day with the sunset toast at Baker House. What a great experience – and the view from their porch is amazing!
Wednesday was another beautiful day in Walworth County (we’ve been blessed with some unseasonably warm days this October – though we’re definitely not complaining!). We took a scenic drive across Walworth County to Fort Atkinson to see Seven Brides for Seven Brothers at the Fireside Theatre; if you haven’t seen a show at Fireside Theatre, take the time to do so – it’s worth it! The Klopcic family is so nice and has done such a great job through the years; you can tell that they love what they do! For those of you unfamiliar with the Fireside Theatre, they are the only equity dinner theatre in Wisconsin. They gather their professional actors from auditions in Chicago and New York City and pride themselves in having a family-friendly atmosphere with every show they put on (they average 6 shows a year, plus Christian concerts periodically). You can view their 2011 & 2012 seasons at http://www.firesidetheatre.com/.
After we finished a delicious lunch & matinee show at Fireside, we headed home – with a quick detour along the way. It was a “theater” day, so we stopped at Young Auditorium on the UW-Whitewater campus to take a tour of their facility. We got to take a sneak peek at the set-up for their Wednesday night show “BLAST,” described as an explosive musical event. The stagehands were hard at work making sure that every element on stage was ready to go! Young Auditorium frequently hosts many exciting shows & theater productions – if you’d like more information on the Young Auditorium, visit http://www.uww.edu/youngauditorium/.
While the weather took a turn for the worse, Thursday was still another adventure-filled day in Walworth County! Starting the day at East Troy Electric Railroad, we learned about the history of East Troy and the important part that the railroad had in it. After a short but beautiful train ride up the tracks, we reached our destination – The Elegant Farmer. Famous for its award-winning apple pie baked in a paper bag, The Elegant Farmer is located at the edge of Walworth County in Mukwonago, WI. Their deli, market, and bakery has something for even the pickiest of eaters. And trust me – their apple pie IS as good as everyone says! In addition to their barn full of scrumptious treasures, The Elegant Farmer has pick-your-own apples and pumpkins, as well as hay rides and annual special events – check them out at http://www.elegantfarmer.com. After a very filling lunch at The Elegant Farmer, we drove to Apple Barn Orchard & Winery in Elkhorn, WI. Family-owned & operated, The Apple Barn farm has been in the Jacobson family since 1848! They offer 12 varieties of apples (including the ever popular Cortland & Honey Crip) as well as strawberries & pumpkins; you can pick your own or get pre-picked…it’s up to you! We, of course, picked our own apples to get the full experience. The Apple Barn also has a gift shop and store full of gifts, food, & cider.
They recently expanded to include a winery in their operation and now offer a wide variety of fruit wines – including a holiday favorite: Pumpkin! Come taste a few wines and pick up a bottle or two for your next celebration. You can view their full wine list as well as their apple selections at http://www.applebarnorchardandwinery.com.
It’s been a great few days in Walworth County, and I can’t WAIT to get out there & continue exploring! Until next time, enjoy our wonderful county! And if you’re feeling up to it – let me know what YOU have been up to in Walworth County!!
